Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5
What a boring title right? However, this is a super big topic. Most of us, including me, live our lives ready for and wanting the next great thing. It’s like when the newest iPhone comes out, we all want it. The phone doesn’t even have to be better than the previous model, in fact it could be worse and still millions of people would buy it. Why? We are humans and our first instinct isn’t contentment it’s wanting. We want to be the cool cat in town. Let me pause here for a second and clarify something, it sounds like I am throwing flaming darts at all of you AMAZING readers, whereas I am really just someone who was convicted of this in my own life and those flaming darts are actually after me.
I have lived most of my life looking for the newest thing and wanting to be the cool guy. Often times I have found that when I am not content I look for people to like me and I try just about anything for them to like me. By the way it never works. I will either start puffing myself up a bunch, which is just me being prideful or I start to change who I am, and this just isn’t okay. All I am doing is saying no too contentment. God has blessed me so much, with more than I deserve. I was really hit hard with this fact, I want people to be my friend or like me because of who Christ made me to be, not for who I am not. As I said earlier, I think this is a normal human tendency, but I hope that you are convicted of it in your own life as I was in mine.
Why must we be content? I believe that we must be content or else we will sink into some deep depravity in life, we will start to become ungrateful and happiness won’t even be a thing in our life. Think about this example, Veruca from Willy Wonka, she is a character who is not one bit content and because of that she is so, so ungrateful and has honestly become a spoiled brat. If you watch she becomes happy when she gets what she wants, but only for about a second, which is just sad. I understand I just used a fictional movie as my example, but it is exactly what will happen in real life. Just look around and watch the people who are like Veruca, I was one of those people and still have that tendency. All I can say is that you and I are BLESSED BEYOND ALL MEASURE!
