So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.
1st Corinthians 10:31-33
Let’s all take a step back and just think about what this verse is saying to us or maybe to you personally. Sometimes doing this is very challenging. I mean you are telling me that when I go to Walmart that I am supposed to give God the Glory? How do I do that? That is the question I think a lot of us ask. I am going to talk about that and the issue of should I take a step back and see if what I am doing is really giving God the Glory. I hope and pray that this will be an encouragement to your life and also that it would convict you like it did me.
Ok, so first I want to dive into the how. Honestly sometimes I even ask this question because it’s just like how can someone give God the Glory when they are playing ping pong. Whereas the answer might seem easy to some to others it is really confusing and that is why I want to help out a little if I can. Say you are playing ping pong, first find out who you are playing with. Do they believe in what you believe in? If not then here is an avenue to share the Word with them and that is obedience towards God which is giving Him Glory. Another thing to check is, are the words flowing out of your mouth pleasing and acceptable to the Lord? If they aren’t then you wouldn’t be giving God the Glory but if you are then God is getting the Glory. The biggest problem that gets in front of giving God the Glory and that we need to check is our own pride. This one hit me. Let me tell you a little story or truth of my life. I play basketball and I asked this very question. How do I give God the Glory while playing basketball? I figured out that my words mattered and that people on my team need to hear this Good News but I was still struggling. Why? My pride was in the way. I tried to be cool, I tried to be like everyone else and the results of this were, not wanting to play anymore and loneliness. So I continued to sit on the bench wondering what was wrong, that’s when I asked God to rid me of my pride and help me to focus on Him. So I did and even though I still have struggles with my pride I play for a bigger purpose and that is to give God the Glory.
Alright so this next part I want to talk about is, “Are the Everything’s we do really giving God the Glory”? I don’t know about any of you but this one really hit me. The one word I want you all to see is EVERYTHING. I believe that we miss this part way too often. One of the examples I am going to use is that of a movie. I have heard a lot of people say they love the movie deadpool and I am sure some of you who will read this might either be one of those people or have just seen it. My intention is not to make you mad or judge you but to help you discern from conforming to this world and instead give God the Glory. Look I know deadpool has a lot of language and much worse things that I don’t even want to talk about. So if you have watched it take a step back and please just ask yourself does watching deadpool in any way build my relationship with Christ up or is there any way I can give him Glory by watching this. I believe the answer is no you can’t unless you don’t watch it at all. Now before you all try to attack me and wonder what gives me any right to say these things let me tell you that I am a culprit of this same thing. No I haven’t watched deadpool but I can tell you I have watched things that are bad in and of themselves and so has everyone else. I do however have a burning in my heart to see those who think that language and nasty other things in movies and in day to day life are ok, that they would see the truth and realize that in EVERYTHING they do that it would be Glorifying to God. I know for sure that this very well could make people angry, but I don’t care that you are angry. What I care for is that this would heavily convict us all. Let’s all take each day and before we do something let’s ask God two things, one if what I am doing is acceptable and glorifying to God and second how can I give God the Glory right here? I thank you all for reading this and if you have problems with what I wrote please don’t hold back let me know. I am not a perfect little Christian who knows everything I am learning and being convicted like you all.
Love this, Zach! “Are the everything we’re doing giving God the glory.” SO true…
Great food for thought. Its so cool to see other teens thinking practically through all this 🙂 *high fives*
